The edgings themselves, depending on the type of installation, can be mortise or overhead. Mortise edgers lay the binding better on turns, but take time to replace the needle plate. Universal overlay edgings are quickly installed on a standard needle plate, but the quality of the curved edging is slightly inferior to that of a mortise edging.
