Northern Shipyard completes testing of the main power plant of the lead ship logistics support project 23120 "Elbrus" for the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation - the equipment is working properly.

The power plant consists of four diesel generators. Start-up of the main engines, load testing of the parking and emergency diesel generators, commissioning of boilers designed to heat the vessel - the final stage of the Elbrus mooring tests, taking place at the outfitting embankment of the Northern Shipyard. After finishing mooring, the ship will go to factory sea trials.

Elbrus has significant technical advantages over other supply vessels. The total power of the main diesel generators (18,400 kW) will allow it to transport 2 thousand tons of payload in clear water at a speed of at least 18 knots, and the ice class (ARC4) will allow it to sail in the Arctic seas all year round.

"Elbrus" corresponds to automation class A1, which means that the vessel can be serviced by a minimum number of personnel. Elbrus has increased maneuverability thanks to bow thrusters, which will allow it to deliver cargo to ships on the high seas and in harbors, where ships used today navy, they can’t come in. High productivity of loading and unloading operations on board will be ensured by electro-hydraulic cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tons. On operating ships there are quite a few cranes with such a large lifting capacity.

"Elbrus" is capable of not only transporting and reloading dry cargo, it has the functions of a tugboat and rescuer, and can help ships and vessels in distress. For this purpose, it provides premises for temporary accommodation of 28 people.

In the next two weeks, the crew will move onto the ship to participate in mooring operations together with the shipbuilders and prepare for factory sea trials.

Elbrus, the lead ship in a series of three logistics support vessels, was laid down in 2012. Two other vessels, Vsevolod Bobrov and Kapitan Shevchenko, were laid down in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Project 23120 was developed by the St. Petersburg design bureau “Spetssudoproekt”.

The Severnaya Verf shipyard (part of JSC USC) will conduct the first stage of factory sea trials of the lead logistics support vessel of Project 23120 Elbrus within seven days.

The entire program of factory sea trials (FST) is divided into three stages. During the first, seven-day stage, under the conditions of a real sea passage, a commissioning team of about a hundred specialists will test all equipment and systems and check the main power plant in different operating modes.

After the vessel returns to the outfitting quay, the shipbuilders will complete mooring tests and eliminate any identified deficiencies. Next, the ship will enter the second, main stage of chemical testing, combined with state tests. It is designed for 14 days. During this time, all equipment and systems will be checked and presented to the customer and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping in the scope of sea trial programs and methods.

Upon completion of the second stage, the shipbuilders will inspect the equipment and systems, prepare the vessel for towing to its home base, where the vessel will be handed over to the customer and a flag-raising ceremony will take place. The shipbuilders plan to transfer the vessel to the Ministry of Defense by the end of 2016.

"Elbrus" has significant technical advantages over other logistics support vessels, since its design was based on the principle of versatility - the ability to perform a wide range of tasks.

The total power of the main diesel generators (17.8 thousand kW) will allow it to transport 4.5 thousand tons of payload or up to 40 sea containers in clear water at a speed of at least 18 knots, and the ice class (ARC4) will allow it to sail in Arctic latitudes, overcoming ice thickness of 0.6 m at a speed of 2 knots. In addition, due to the powerful power plant, the ship can follow in the formation of ships performing a combat mission.

Elbrus has increased maneuverability thanks to bow thrusters, which will allow it to deliver cargo to ships on the high seas. High productivity of loading and unloading operations on board will be ensured by electro-hydraulic cranes with a lifting capacity of 50 tons. On operating ships there are quite a few cranes with such a large lifting capacity. Maneuverability and equipment with modern powerful cranes make the Project 23120 vessel an excellent assistant in servicing drilling platforms. The vessel has the ability to receive and transfer cargo from a helicopter.

"Elbrus" is capable of not only transporting and reloading dry cargo, it has the functions of a tug. For towing support, main and auxiliary towing winches with a traction force of 120 and 25 tons, respectively, are installed on the deck. This equipment in combination with a powerful power plant, it allows, if necessary, to tow even an aircraft carrier.

Another purpose of the vessel is to help ships and vessels in distress. For this purpose, it is equipped with a pressure chamber for decompression and general barogen therapy and a rescue evacuation system, as well as premises for temporary accommodation of 16 people.

"Elbrus" is ready to carry out research tasks. For example, to map the bottom topography and search for sunken objects, it is equipped with a multi-beam echo sounder.

"Elbrus" corresponds to automation class A1, which means that the vessel can be serviced by a minimum number of personnel. The crew has comfortable cabins, a modern utility block, a gym, and a sauna with a swimming pool.

During the construction of Elbrus, import substitution of some equipment was successfully carried out. For example, instead of an imported power cable, a domestic analogue was used, a foreign finely sprayed water system was replaced with a Russian one, just as instead of a European-made hydroacoustic antenna, one made in Russia was used.

Severnaya Verf is 103 years old, and over its long life the plant has built about 600 ships and vessels. The shipyard is interesting because it was, to some extent, an experimental testing ground: everything here was created according to the principle of the Guinness Book of Records - “the largest”, “the fastest”. Now the plant builds both military and civilian ships, including logistics support vessels.

Tests of the emergency diesel generator have already been completed, and the standby diesel generator has been started. It was thanks to them and controlled propulsion systems - rudder propellers - that Elbrus, in comparison with ships with conventional propulsion systems, received better maneuverability both in course and speed. The ships of this project can, according to shipbuilders, spin around their axis like a tractor. This means they can moor for cargo delivery at any time and from any angle. In addition, this technical solution made it possible to reduce the volume of the engine room, increasing cargo capacity.

The main characteristics of Project 23120 logistics support vessels are as follows: length - about 95 meters, width - about 22 meters, displacement - approximately 10,000 tons, cruising range - about 5,000 miles, autonomy - about 60 days. The ship is designed for 27 crew members, but in the event of rescue operations, the number of people on board the Elbrus can be increased to 43. For comparison, this is ten times less than the number of people building the ship now. By the way, in the room intended for the rescued, the same shipwrights’ office is now located.

As for cargo delivery, Elbrus can transport about forty twenty-foot containers or, conversely, twenty forty-foot ones. All containers are placed on the cargo deck. Contents - everything that fits into the container. But no liquids, only dry cargo. For loading and unloading containers on the Elbrus there are two symmetrically located cranes of 50 tons each. "Elbrus" has a high ice class ARC4, which gives it the opportunity to sail in Arctic latitudes. The vessel's hull thickness has been increased and a double side is used. That is, there is an air gap between the walls. This is especially true for those compartments where water and fuel tanks are located.

The ship uses several types of insulation, including liquid insulation - "Teplotor". A layer of 3 mm replaces the usual glass wool, 6-7 centimeters thick. So, in addition to convenient application, Teplotor’s big advantage is also its space saving. This is especially true where a wide viewing angle from the window is important, as, for example, on the captain's bridge. In Arctic conditions, this isolation also worked well. Otherwise, according to the ship's builders, it would not have been used.

A series of three logistics support vessels with a high ice class ARC4 based on Project 23120 is being built at the Severnaya Verf Shipyard OJSC for the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in accordance with the contract dated June 29, 2012, concluded between the Severnaya Verf Shipyard OJSC and the Federal Agency for the supply of weapons, military.

The contract provides for the construction of the lead vessel and two serial ones. The lead vessel should be delivered to the customer in November 2014, the second - in November 2015, the third - in November 2016. Vessels based on Project 23120 will be built for the Northern, Black Sea and Pacific fleets.
