PVC boats are becoming more and more popular every day among fishermen in our country. Every fisherman at least once thought about having his own watercraft: a boat or a motorboat. No one needs to explain how significantly a PVC boat expands the angler’s fishing capabilities. Owning your own boat or motorboat is not a cheap pleasure, but there is an alternative option: a PVC inflatable boat.

An inflatable boat, unlike a regular one, has large number advantages:

  • An inflatable boat takes up significantly less storage space; it can be stored in a garage, utility room, even in an apartment.
  • An inflatable boat is much more convenient to transport to a fishing spot; there is no need to purchase a car trailer or install a tow bar.
  • To launch an inflatable boat there is no need to look for special place, an inflatable boat weighs significantly less, so even one person can easily launch it into the water.
  • The price of an inflatable boat is several times cheaper, so a large number of people can afford to buy it.

The first inflatable boats were made of rubber; they were not very reliable in operation, but were inexpensive; anyone could afford to buy such a boat for fishing, hunting or tourism. The basis of a rubber boat is a synthetic mesh or cotton fabric, covered on both sides with rubber for gas-tightness. Over time, factories that manufactured rubber boats improved their manufacturing technology and began to use rubber with a high content of natural rubber, making the boats much better and more reliable.

In the 90s, the first inflatable boats made of a new, more modern material, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), appeared. PVC fabric was a nylon mesh coated on both sides with a layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is an elastic material that provides airtightness. PVC boats were significantly superior in performance to rubber boats, but at first they were much more expensive than rubber boats. A little later, everything began to appear on the market more manufacturers and prices for PVC boats have decreased significantly. Today, PVC inflatable boats have become the most popular type of boat of all.

Advantages of PVC boats

  • Easy storage of PVC boats. Before storage, a rubber boat must be thoroughly washed, dried thoroughly, sprinkled with talcum powder and stored, if possible, unfolded, in a partially inflated state, so that the boat does not rot or become moldy. There are no such problems with the PVC boat, I rolled it up and put it in storage until spring: in the garage, on the loggia, in the basement. The storage temperature of a PVC boat is from -40 to +50 degrees. It is advisable to store a rubber boat at temperatures from -5 to +35 degrees.
  • PVC boats are more resistant to tearing and abrasion. PVC fabric is denser and rougher in structure, so it can withstand mechanical stress better. The rubberized fabric of a rubber boat does not resist longitudinal cuts well, so the rubber boat must be protected from sharp branches, snags, sharp stones and glass fragments.
  • The seams of PVC boats are much stronger and more aesthetically pleasing than the seams of rubber boats. The seams are the most weak point rubber boat, to strengthen them, the seams are covered with special tapes, so they look much less aesthetically pleasing. And despite the reinforcement of the seams with tapes, the strength of the seams of a rubber boat is still worse than that of a PVC boat. The tensile strength of seams for a PVC boat is 3.5-4.5 kg, for the seams of a rubber boat it is 0.5 kg.
  • PVC boat cylinders hold a higher pressure, their working pressure is 0.3, while rubber boats have a working pressure of 0.15. The pressure in the cylinders of a rubber boat must be carefully controlled, otherwise in the heat, the overinflated cylinders can burst; this can especially happen with an old boat that has served its owner for many years. This does not happen with a PVC boat.
  • PVC boats have less weight than rubber inflatable boats. This moment becomes especially sensitive with a large inflatable boat.
  • The fabric from which PVC boats are made is much more practical than rubberized fabric. It does not rot, is not exposed to fungi and bacteria, does not absorb moisture, and is not afraid of frost or ultraviolet radiation.
  • PVC boats are well suited for use with a motor, since PVC fabric is not afraid of contact with petroleum products: gasoline, motor oil.
  • Manufacturers of PVC fabric produce more than 20 colors and shades of their fabrics, which allows designers and constructors of PVC boats to create beautiful and aesthetically pleasing boats to suit every taste of their customers.
  • PVC boats are considered safer; even if the boat cylinder is punctured, the air from the PVC boat cylinder comes out much more slowly, leaving the boat owner more time to take measures to save the boat and the property in the boat. Rubber boats sink faster.

Disadvantages of PVC boats

  • PVC boats, due to the greater rigidity of the material, take up more volume when folded. A rubber boat of the same size will take up less space when folded than a boat made of PVC fabric.
  • In late autumn, at sub-zero temperatures, when folding a PVC boat, difficulties often arise because the fabric of the boat becomes coarser, becomes stiff and is difficult to fold. Although speaking about this drawback, it should be noted that very few people use a boat at sub-zero temperatures; most owners use an inflatable boat at ambient temperatures above 15 degrees.
  • Repairing a PVC boat is considered more difficult than repairing a rubber boat. In the early days after the first boats made of PVC fabric appeared, it was very difficult for the owners of such boats to find glue and a repair kit to repair their boat. Currently, along with each boat made of PVC material, glue and a set of patches are included in the kit for repairing punctures and cuts in the field. In addition, through the advertisements you can find craftsmen in your city who can qualitatively repair your PVC boat, eliminating any problems with your boat.
  • A PVC boat, as a rule, costs much more than a rubber boat. Although in lately prices for PVC boats are almost equal to the prices for rubber boats.
  • The PVC fabric material can be easily burned by a cigarette or coal from a fire, so when using the boat you need to be careful and attentive, especially if you are a smoker.

Choosing a PVC boat

A person has a lot of questions when choosing an inflatable boat, especially if this is his first boat. When choosing a boat, you need to consider several important points:

  • The size of the boat should match the size of the body of water where you will be fishing. The larger the size of the body of water, the larger your boat should be.
  • Be sure to consider the number of people who will be on the boat with you.
  • For fishing on a small body of water: a pond or a small river, a simple rowing boat designed for one, maximum two people is quite sufficient. For fishing on a large body of water: a large reservoir, a large river, a lake, it is better to purchase a PVC boat with a transom for installing an outboard motor.
  • Pay attention to the number of cylinders in the boat, there should be at least two, or even better, three. The more cylinders in the boat, the safer it is.
  • Boats differ in the density of the PVC fabric from which they are made. The higher the density of the fabric, the thicker and stronger the fabric will be, but at the same time the weight of the boat increases. It is advisable to choose boats with a fairly high density of PVC fabric.
  • The bottom of the boat may vary in design. There are boats with an inflatable bottom, as well as boats with a bottom made of plywood or even aluminum.
  • If for you great value have ride quality boat and its stability on the water, try to test the model of your future boat by borrowing a boat of the same model from your familiar fishermen and trying it on the water.

Organization own production boats requires a relatively large starting capital(according to some sources, from 3-5 million rubles) and, no less important, the presence of great knowledge and experience in this field. Manufacturing such products is a complex process that takes a lot of time. The development of one model can take several months, including design, sample production and testing.

Inflatable boats are used by hunters, tourists and just vacationers. They are relatively reliable, compact, easy to operate and inexpensive.

There are several of the most famous Russian manufacturers, which specialize in the production of such products: Ufa plant, Yaroslavl plant, LLC PFK Mnev and K, Leader, LLC TD Fregat, TPS Center Mnev, Rotan, Mobile Group, Solar; joint ventures: Badger (St. Petersburg – South Korea), Korsar (Moscow/St. Petersburg - South Korea), Petroset (official representative of Yamaha in Russia). Among Western manufacturing companies whose products are actively promoted on Russian market, can be called Zodiak, QuickSilver, Suzuki Marine, Honda.

Inflatable boats are either rowing or motorized. The difference lies in their design. The first ones are quite simple and cheap. Their sides are usually divided into several compartments, which gives them greater safety: even if one compartment is damaged, the boat will not sink. The bottom (payola) of the boat can be semi-rigid or rigid. In the first case, plastic or plywood is inserted into it, and in the second case, it is reinforced entirely with plywood or a light alloy plate. In addition, sometimes, to give the hull greater rigidity, it is equipped with a hard bench, which is installed between the sides. In addition to it or instead of it, inflatable cushions are also used as seats.

Models with an outboard engine are noticeably different in design from boats of the first type. The nature of the differences depends on the power of the installed engine and the operating conditions of a particular model. The main difference between these boats and rowing boats is the presence of a rigid transom on which the engine is mounted, and more durable elements for attaching it to the hull.

Boats with a small engine with a power of up to 2-3 horsepower have either an inflatable bottom or reinforced with transverse slats. They, like regular inflatable boats, easily fit when folded into a bag for transportation. Boats with a more powerful motor are equipped with rigid floors.

Inflatable boat production technology

Several basic materials are used in the production of inflatable boats: reinforced and non-reinforced PVC materials, rubberized fabric, polyurethane, hipalon and neoprene. All these materials differ in properties and operating conditions. Most boats domestic production and the cylinders for them are made of reinforced PVC. This material consists of several layers. It is based on a synthetic woven fabric, which is coated on both sides with several layers of PVC. Since polyvinyl chloride in its pure form is a non-plastic substance, polyurethane is added to it during production. There are such types of PVC fabrics as fabric, special for boats and construction. The special “boat” material PVC has several advantages. It is resistant to stains, abrasion and UV radiation. It is quite easy to repair if the boat suddenly leaks. The only negative: this material does not lend itself well to local staining. It can only be painted completely and only at the production stage: special dyes are added to polyvinyl chloride.

The second most popular material in our country that is used for the production of boats is rubberized fabric. Its main advantage is low price. Unfortunately, among the shortcomings, experts note low resistance to fading, abrasion, susceptibility to rotting, etc.

Boats made of unreinforced polyvinyl chloride are produced mainly by Western companies. They are inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to use. The disadvantages include the ability of this material to stretch under the influence of high temperatures, poor elasticity at low temperatures and low strength. It is also worth noting that if in the production of conventional inflatable boats the technology of gluing seams is used, then when producing models from unreinforced PVC, the seams of the boat are glued, which increases its reliability.

Ready ideas for your business

Hipalon and neoprene are relatively new materials, but they are already actively used in the production of sports equipment, including wetsuits, boats, etc. They are also multi-layered and made from synthetic fabric. But unlike PVC, the first woven layer is covered first with a layer of neoprene, and on top of layers of hipalon. This technology is expensive, so it is not used by domestic companies. In addition, the specificity of the raw materials used does not allow welding of such material, which further increases the cost finished product. However, boats made from this material are of high quality and have a long service life.

Inflatable boats are also made from polyurethane itself - the same one that is added to polyvinyl chloride to increase the plasticity of the latter. This material is highly porous, so it easily sticks to the fabric base. Boats made from this material are ideal for use in extreme conditions.

To manufacture boats, domestic manufacturers use high-quality materials and components that are imported from other countries (usually European - Germany, Poland, France, Italy, etc.). For example, the leader in the production of special PVC fabric for inflatable boats is considered German company Heytex. Its products are known for their high puncture and abrasion resistance. Also, for the production of boats (except for models made of neoprene), special equipment for high-frequency welding is required, which ensures complete tightness and strength weld seam. UHF welding and vulcanization are used to make seams on PVC-based coated materials.

PVC boat production technology has two different approaches. The first approach is that boats are made by gluing. The second approach is production using so-called cold welding.

Both approaches can be considered completely equivalent, from the point of view of the capabilities and characteristics of the resulting seams, and all speculation about the fact that some technology is better is completely unfounded. If, of course, all the nuances of technology are observed.

Features of the welding method

One of the myths about boats made using welding technology was that when welding with high-frequency waves, the surface layers of PVC are destroyed, thinned, and the seam becomes less durable. In fact, everything is completely different.

Indeed, the surface layers of PVC melt in the fabric of the cylinders and the fabric of the linings laid on both sides at the joints.

But at the same time, at the welding site, a monolithic material is formed at the joints. The strength in these places becomes greater than the strength of the PVC materials on the cylinders. The same thing is observed at the junction of the bottom with the cylinders.

Formally, the seams should be weaker in strength, but in practice the opposite is true. It is at the seams that the main strength is concentrated.

The welding method makes it possible to make maximum use of automatic machines to speed up the entire technological process.

Features of the gluing method

Modern production of PVC boats using the gluing method is reminiscent of the manufacturing technology of rubber boats. The formed cylinders fit into one another and are glued together using special adhesives. At the same time the process is underway heating the gluing area. At the same time, the temperature does not violate the structure and integrity of the surface layer of the PVC material. The quality of the seam depends on the width of the overlap, the quality of the glue and adherence to technology ( temperature regime, time periods).

At the same time, there is a method of butt gluing. In this case, at the point where the cylinders are joined, reinforcing pads are used on both sides. The quality of the seam depends on professionalism, accuracy and adherence to technology. Many well-known companies use this technology. The quality of the seams is in no way inferior to other connection options.

Other technological subtleties

For well-known manufacturers, the cutting of patterns for cylinder bodies, bottoms, and mating parts is carried out using a cutting machine laser machine. This technology allows you to most accurately cut out the parts of a future boat from PVC material.

There is one more structural part of inflatable boats, the quality of which is particularly demanding for manufacturers. These are sealed jumpers that separate the compartments of boats. The jumpers are made in the form of cones and act as a certain pressure regulator. Essentially membranes. The unsinkability of the boat and the safety of people depend on the quality and correctness of the jumper.

In the event of a breakdown of one of the cylinders, the jumper prevents the air from completely escaping from the cylinders. At the same time, bending towards the broken cylinder increases the volume of the whole cylinder, which can be inflated in the event of an accident and thereby increase the carrying capacity of the remaining undamaged part of the boat.

The production of PVC boats involves the use of certain technologies in the formation of a hard bottom.

There are several options for the bottom: a stacked type bottom, which looks like segments of waterproof plywood that are inserted into PVC openings, glued or welded to the main bottom. The technology for fastening the openings depends on the general manufacturing technology of the PVC boat.

The inflatable bottom - airdeck - looks like two planes (essentially a mat), which under pressure are at some distance from each other. The distance is set by low-stretch threads, which are located perpendicular to the plane of the inflatable bottom. This bottom is made of a special material that can withstand high pressure.

The book-shaped bottom is made of separate movable segments, and such a bottom completely covers the entire area of the main bottom. The segments are fastened to each other using a special material glued to the segments and capable of withstanding repeated bends.

The ends must be covered with PVC covers to prevent rubbing of the cylinders.

Inflatable boats for fishing

When choosing a boat for fishing, be sure to take into account:

  • dimensions and number of seats in it;
  • length, width, height and weight;
  • bottom type (inflatable or hard);
  • practicality (the ability to move seats) and safety (the density of PVC fabric, the shape of the side, etc.).

You should also pay attention to the individual elements of the boat. For example, standing on an inflatable bottom makes it more difficult to cast a spinning rod than on a boat with a hard deck. The choice of bottoms today is quite varied.

Choosing a bottom for inflatable boats:

  • hard deck (payol);
  • folding payol (payol-book);
  • hard flooring with an N-shaped profile;
  • hard floor with stringers;
  • slatted flooring;
  • inflatable bottom;
  • tension deck.

Take this data into account when choosing materials and parts for your future successful and selling model.

When drawing up a business plan, the first thing to do is to analyze the raw materials for the production of boats and select the optimal materials. For example, polyvinyl chloride can be reinforced or unreinforced. The first one is more reliable and durable. The second one costs much less, but is easier to stretch and has low strength indicators.

Boats made of reinforced PVC have a number of advantages:

  1. Strength.
  2. Resistance to UV rays of the sun.
  3. Easy repair.
  4. Resistant to corrosion and dirt.
  5. Compact and optimal weight.

Other materials used in production include polyurethane and rubberized fabric.

Manufacturers of inflatable and rigid frame boats, when designing and manufacturing their products, strive to take into account extensive natural and climatic conditions, possible conditions of reservoirs, and the operational requirements of numerous fishermen and hunters.

Software for designing sketches and final drawings, automated cutting, manufacturing of component parts and assemblies on high-precision CNC machines allow factories to produce small vessels close to European quality standards.

For the production of inflatable boats (and parts) domestic factories use:

  • rubberized fabric. Low price of the product, but weak strength. The downside of the material is molding if storage rules are not followed, which characterizes the lowest-cost version of the floating craft.
  • reinforced five-layer PVC fabric. Thermoplastic polymer "PolyVinyl Chloride" is obtained from petroleum and table salt. Reinforcing cord made of lavsan (polyester) provides strength and resistance to penetrating cuts and punctures. The outer polymer layer is waterproof, not destroyed by ultraviolet radiation, and resistant to salt water and fuels and lubricants. The seams can be easily and reliably welded with hot air or glued together with polymer adhesives.
  • Hypolon. Airtight polymer material. Does not require pumping for 6 - 10 weeks. Stronger and more durable than PVC. The impossibility of air welding of seams requires additional special equipment.
  • polyurethane. Material for boats used in extreme conditions. Durable, plastic, reliably reinforced, easy to glue due to sufficient porosity, and resistant to abrasion.

In the manufacture of rigid-hull boats, polymer fiberglass mixtures are used, various types plywood, rolled aluminum alloy AMg5M. The good ductility of the alloy for pressing and cold stamping, strength, lightness, reliable weldability, and corrosion resistance have ensured the widespread use of the alloy in shipbuilding with the title “marine”.
