Canon released this model, on the one hand, to modernize their point-and-shoot cameras, and on the other hand, they created a great new camera to complement their existing DSLRs. This camera has a smaller sensor, but it includes a 4x optical zoom, and a range optical zoom, equivalent to 28-112mm.

While the Sony RX100 is undeniably a marvel among miniature cameras, I have to tell you, the EOS M is about the same size and weight as its interchangeable lens rivals when compared to the body without a lens. But of course, a camera without a lens is only half the battle, and the big difference comes when you add your optics. Canon EOS M currently has only two native lenses, these are 22mm f2.0 pancake (61x24mm, 105g, closest focus at 15cm, unstabilized) and 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS zoom (61x61mm, 210g, closest focus at a distance of 25 cm). Thus, the camera fits the lens and EOS M 57mm (damn it) and the camera becomes more bulky and heavy thick (403 grams), and if you install a zoom lens on it, it will become even larger (by 94mm and 508 grams).

The Sony 18-55mm E-mount is similar in size and weight to the Canon, bringing the NEX-5N up to 98mm thick and its total weight equals 463 grams. Panasonic's mainstream 14-42mm is also about the same size, bringing the GX1's thickness to 103mm and weight to 483g. Meanwhile Olympus supplies a collapsed 14-42mm lens, which in its thinnest configuration brings the E-P3 to 84mm and its total weight to 482 grams.

Thus, most of the interchangeable lens soap dishes mentioned above are approximately the same size when lenses are attached to them. The size and weight of the camera largely depends on which lens was attached to it.

Given the parameters of the EOS M, you can confidently say that this is really a pocket camera if you install an unstabilized pancake prime 22mm f2.0 lens on it. If you install any other larger lens on it, the camera will become much larger and heavier. To be completely honest, Micro Four Thirds cameras fall short of traditional DSLRs in terms of image quality, and their main advantage is good quality and compact design, so Canon, like Sony, should quickly make their cameras smaller.

After such a detailed discussion of size and weight, the design and controls of the EOS M should simply be described. found in EOS DSLRs, or even higher-end PowerShot series such as the S or SX. On the top panel, much to the chagrin of many enthusiasts, there is no dedicated mode dial, just a rotary switch located around the shutter button, you can choose between full Stills Auto mode, creative photo mode and video shooting. Don't worry, it's also possible to select PASM modes, but you'll have to do it via an on-screen menu, just like it's on Sony's NEX systems.

On the camera, you'll find a conventional four-way rocker with direct access to the mode dial, exposure compensation, exposure lock, and a Delete button. There are dedicated buttons for accessing menus, viewing and playback information, and a button for starting and stopping video recording. All other functions are accessed via the menu system's touch screen, apart from the external design, the menu is basically similar to that used in the EOS 650D, so in this sense, it can satisfy enthusiasts. Simple external controls and advanced OSD technology work well together to make the EOS M accessible and understandable to beginners and photography connoisseurs alike.

In terms of connectivity, the EOS M is equipped with USB/AV and mini HDMI ports, and a very pleasant surprise is the inclusion of a 3.5mm microphone jack, which gives the camera an edge over competing models. But let's not talk about the bad for so long. The EOS M locks securely into position and is easily operated with manual controls. This, along with the lack of an electronic viewfinder option, makes the EOS M a solid entry-level camera, despite the price.

Lens mount in Canon EOS M

EOS M introduces the new EF-M lens mount. It is designed for short focal length lenses, although thanks to the APS-C sensor, any lens mounted on the EOS M has a 1.6x focal length and, like any Canon DSLR, image stabilization must be built into the lens .

Canon launched the EOS M System with just two native EF-M lenses ready for it: a 22mm f2 unstabilized pancake prime (35mm equivalent, 15cm minimum focus distance) and an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 stabilized zoom (29-88mm equivalent range, minimum focusing distance 25cm). Both Canon lenses are equipped with the latest STM stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocusing during movie recording.

So for cameras, there is no portrait lens, no macro, no ultra-wide angle, and no super zoom, native EF-M mount. Only two native lenses are the main EOS M lenses on the market, although it is very important and desirable to be able to use any EF and EF-S mount lens that can be connected to the EOS thanks to the EF adapter.

Of course, one of the advantages of any mirrorless camera is the ability to use almost any lens with an adapter, and Canon EF adapters do exist, as do competitors. But there's something that makes the EOS stand out from the rest, it's the only one that supports auto exposure, electronic control aperture and most importantly, autofocus with EF lenses. So suddenly a camera that has only two native lenses becomes the only camera that has access to all the variety of optics created in more than 60 years. In addition, the adapter is distributed at a moderate price, it is cheaper than similar adapters for Nikon 1 and Sony NEX.

However, there is one thing that cannot be ignored, and that is the autofocus performance of the EOS M with EF lenses. We haven't had a chance to test the final performance of the EOS M with the EF adapter yet, so we can't draw any definitive conclusions. According to the specifications, continuous autofocus is only supported on native EF-M lenses.

Thus, the camera will do great for landscape, macro photography, but portrait, street or sports shooting will not work as well, due to the too slow burst speed and the lack of continuous autofocus. However, the fact that autofocus will be available in principle makes the camera more attractive to buyers than other models and competitors' cameras. Canon understands this very well, but, nevertheless, I would like it to release additional native lenses as soon as possible, this did not happen at Photokina in mid-September, but we are still hoping and waiting for the announcement of the release of new lenses.

Shooting modes in the Canon EOS M

Canon EOS M has a simple set of modes, it has only three positions for completely automatic shooting, creative modes and movie mode. By setting it to Full Auto, you can be sure the EOS M will do everything for you. But by turning the dial to the creative mode position, you can manually adjust the camera. You will have a wide choice of scenes and traditional modes in which you can operate using the touch screen.

You'll be pleased to find traditional DSLR modes such as Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority, as well as a fully manual mode with shutter speeds from 1/4000 to 30 seconds plus a maximum shutter speed option. The fastest flash sync speed is 1/200. Exposure compensation is possible in the range of +/-2EV. Unlike the Nikon 1, the mirrorless compact doesn't have a built-in intervalometer or slow-motion feature, although if the EOS M is operated using the EOS utility, then the feature works remotely.

Like many mirrorless cameras, the EOS M uses electronic shutter first, for quick response, and a mechanical second curtain for exposure. DSLR owners may be afraid that as a result of such work, the camera may be subject to unwanted effects of dirt and dust, but again, as practice shows, dust problems are very rare with such SLR cameras.

Among the usual scene selection modes, the camera has two new modes borrowed from the EOS 650D: HDR mode, which combines three shots with different exposures, expanding the tonal dynamic range and Multi-shot Noise Reduction mode, in this mode four frames are combined, this is necessary to reduce noise. Canon EOS M in movie mode

The EOS M essentially inherits the video capabilities from its predecessor, the EOS 650D. It can shoot 1080p video at 24, 25, or 30 fps, or 720p at 50 or 60 fps, or VGA at 25p or 30p. The camera offers full manual control, and thanks to the hybrid autofocus system, you have the option of continuous autofocus while recording – although it's hard to say how well this works. An impressive feature of the EOS M is an external microphone input in addition to the built-in stereo microphone, as well as the ability to manually adjust the sound level.

Unlike many Canon DSLRs, the EOS M does not offer 1080p recording at 50p or 60p. Although in my opinion, video enthusiasts would rather prefer a microphone jack combined with slower recording than a faster frequency. A fuller camera can be a great addition to your more professional video recording equipment, as the recording quality is quite acceptable, and the camera itself is very compact and convenient.

The EOS M offers one continuous shooting speed of 4.3 fps. Of course, 4.3 fps is a bit slower than 5 fps. in the EOS 650D, and much slower than its direct competitors, which can shoot at around 10fps.

The lack of continuous autofocus on the EF and EF-S lenses was no doubt a big disappointment. As we have already said, there are only two native EF-M lenses, and, of course, photographers would like to use other compatible optics without restrictions.

Thus, the Nikon 1 mirrorless remains the best choice for those who want to shoot bursts at high speed with their compact. I would like to hope that in the future we will wait for a mirrorless camera from Canon with which continuous shooting become more productive.

Matrix in Canon EOS M

The Canon EOS M features the same 18 megapixel APS-C sensor as the EOS 650D and includes built-in phase detection autofocus with face detection. Aside from the full-frame Leica M, the EOS M will be the mirrorless camera with the largest sensor, surpassing Sony NEX, Samsung NX and Fujifilm X-Pro1 in this parameter. Only the Sony NEX 7 has a higher resolution - 24 Megapixels.

Thanks to such a good huge sensor, the camera can use the existing range of EF and EF-S lenses, originally created for SLR cameras. A soap dish can take the same crisp, noise-free photos with excellent tonal dynamic range as a DSLR. And this is indeed the case, since the EOS M has exactly the same image quality as the EOS 650D.

The APS-C sensor format gives the EOS M an edge over its main competitor Nikon, with its Micro Four Thirds standard. Nikon 1 and Micro Four Thirds systems have good potential with small lenses, while with APS-C you have the ability to use long range lenses.

The EOS M can also use EF and EF-S lenses, some of which are great telephoto lenses, and if you don't mind the lack of auto burst shooting, you'll be able to take the same quality shots as you would with a DSLR.

And finally, about ISO. Light sensitivity ranges from 100 to 25600 ISO, or from 100 to 6400 ISO units in automatic mode.

Conclusion

The Canon EOS M is Canon's first mirrorless camera. And of course. As the first generation in a series of mirrorless cameras, the EOS M comes with its own set of flaws and some roughness, lacking some of the features that photography enthusiasts were hoping for. But at the same time, the camera provides something that other manufacturers cannot provide to their customers, this is the ability to use the entire collection of Canon lenses, which has been developed over half a century. Compatibility with EF lenses is an undeniable advantage of this model.

Compatibility with existing EF and EF-S lenses puts the EOS M head and shoulders above its competitors, and that's an undeniable fact. Yes, the camera has only two native lenses, but this is just the beginning. But in general, you can connect to it through the adapter more than 70 lenses that she inherited. In this regard, this soap box is no different from a regular DSLR.

The ability to connect all kinds of optics is great, but even here we stumble upon some pitfalls. EOS M does not support continuous autofocus with EF and EF-S lenses, and more slow speed autofocus with these lenses, which, of course, makes working with the camera not so pleasant. And to be completely honest, the desired results with non-native optics can only be achieved in manual mode, with autofocus you will not achieve the same as you would expect from a SLR camera.

As for the quality of the camera shooting with native EF-M lenses, a lot depends on how well the hybrid autofocus system works. We don’t have the opportunity to say more yet, since there will be no final results until we have the opportunity to shoot and work with this camera on our own. It is worth noting that companies such as Panasonic, Olympus, Sony showed very similar results in autofocus. Whereas Nikon, for now, outperforms all of its competitors in continuous autofocus.

Speaking of other features, a lot has already been said about how the EOS M lacks a traditional set of modes and has minimal physical control, no built-in flash, no built-in electronic viewfinder, not even the means to connect it as an accessory, fixed screen and no built-in image stabilization. Although not surprising, Canon prefers to provide stabilization to its optics, so there is no stabilization in their cameras. The absence of an electronic viewfinder or any means to connect it is perhaps a big mistake of the manufacturers, which will scare away many enthusiasts. Personally, I'm not bothered by the lack of physical control when there is a screen with such a great interface, but focusing with the screen as the only means of composition is very unprofessional. The lack of a built-in flash is also annoying, especially if we're not in one of those regions where the camera doesn't ship with the Speedlite EX90.
If you're looking for a compact, interchangeable camera that has a viewfinder, built-in flash, and a manual control dial, look to cameras from Panasonic and Olympus, which also have a wide range of native lenses in this category and are incredibly fast. autofocus mode. Yes, there are many disadvantages, but it is worth paying attention to the positive aspects of the EOS M system. First, it is compatible (with some limitations) with all EF lenses, which makes this camera an extremely attractive option for Canon DSLR owners. Secondly, it has a decent APS-C sized sensor with good performance, identical to existing EOS DSLRs. Thirdly, it's good manual camera control, full manual exposure, sound level control and the ability to connect an external microphone. Fourth, a standard hot shoe that can mount any Canon Speedlite flash, and fifth is the user-friendly touch screen interface. As for the hybrid autofocus system, it can be a big plus or minus depending on its performance in practice.

Performance and image quality

Canon EOS M takes excellent quality pictures worthy of the EOS brand. In daylight, photos are crisp and accurate in color.

The kit with the 18-55mm lens doesn't have a great zoom range, but in most situations it won't be needed. The textured surface on the zoom and focus rings makes it easy to rotate them.

The Scene Intelligent Auto option works best only under ideal shooting conditions, otherwise it is better to use semi-automatic modes like Aperture Priority. The bright LCD display reacts according to the settings, so you can see how the finished photo will look.

In low light, the quality of the shooting is not greatly reduced. You can set the ISO value up to 25600, but above 6400 there is digital noise. Handheld Night Scene mode takes four consecutive photos and combines them into one bright and clear image. For the best night shots, you need a tripod or a flat, still surface.

Videos are smooth, with precise focus and good exposure. There is a built-in microphone for best quality sound, and through the appropriate connector you can connect an external microphone.

A dedicated red dot record button works when the camera is already in video mode. Autofocus with any lens is very slow - despite the manufacturer's promise high speed CMOSAF. Canon DSLR owners will be disappointed. If there is not enough light, it will take a long time to release the shutter.

Software in Canon EOS M

In the latest firmware update (2.0.3), autofocus speed has increased, although it is far from the level of modern mirrorless cameras. Most of the settings are made in the user interface on the touch screen. Changing the shooting mode, ISO level, or exposure compensation takes more time than if the camera had physical buttons and dials. The Canon EOS M constantly experiences delays when switching.

The Touch Shutter function allows you to focus on desired area. This is not always convenient, and if you touch the display during the shooting, you get a random shot.

The long lens outweighs the body of the EOS M, so the camera must be held firmly with both hands, making it difficult to use the LCD screen.

Outcome

Canon EOS M - although an updated camera, but despite the many predecessors, the company did not take into account the experience, so the device cannot compete with analogues from Nikon, Sony, Panasonic or Olympus.
