Train compiler is an employee of a railway transport enterprise responsible for the formation and disbandment of trains, various compositions, and safety during shunting work. The train compiler can be both the manager of train shunting movements and the performer of these works. Permission to work on non-public tracks is issued to train compilers of the 3rd and 4th categories, according to ETKS. Permission to work on public tracks is issued to train compilers of the 5th and 6th categories, according to ETKS.

The train compiler performs the following operations during his work:

  • via radio communication, as well as manual and sound signals, gives movement commands to the shunting locomotive, JSPS with and without cars;
  • uncoupling and coupling of cars;
  • connection and disconnection of brake hoses;
  • securing the train when it is stopped;
  • translation of non-centralized arrows;
  • braking of uncouples (that is, regulation of the speed of movement of one car or group of cars, 1) following the track under the influence of its own weight when moving from a profiled hump by means of thrusting; 2) following the path under the influence of inertial force when the trains are disbanded using the single push method).

The train compiler, being the head of the shunting crew, is obliged, before the start of shunting movements, to bring the shunting work plan to the members of the shunting crew, which, in addition to the train compiler, also includes: the locomotive driver and his assistant, switch post attendants, speed controllers and signalmen. The train compiler is operationally subordinate to the station duty officer (DSP), shunting dispatcher (DSTs), less often the park duty officer (DSPP) or the hill duty officer (DSPG).

The main regulatory documents that guide the train compiler in the process of shunting work are the PTE, ISI, IDP, as well as the TPA stations at which he performs shunting work, “Regulations for negotiations between the driver, the DSP and the train compiler during shunting work”, “Job description for the compiler trains and his assistant,” as well as other instructions, orders and telegrams.

About professional responsibilities

It is also necessary to mention the duties of the train compiler. This specialist really has many functions: in fact, the efficiency of train movement depends on him. Here are just some of the main responsibilities of a representative of the profession in question:

  • Work on translating arrows, which are non-centralized.
  • Timely fencing of train cars with brake shoes.
  • Ensuring the safety and security of trains.
  • Uncoupling and trailering of wagons.
  • Work when changing the composition of trains - management of locomotive maneuvers. Of course, the train compiler has many other responsibilities and functions. However, their number will depend only on the place of work, namely on the station itself and the region where it is located.

About the rights of the train compiler

The instructions of representatives of the profession in question assign certain rights to workers. Below, only some of the most basic rights of the train compiler will be named. So, the employee has the right to request from his superiors the equipment necessary for work, namely:

  • special work uniform;
  • signal lamp;
  • yellow flag;
  • walkie-talkie and portable radio station, as well as other accessories.

An employee has the right to file a complaint if he was not given accessories in the form of workwear, safety shoes, signal elements, etc. The labor protection of a train compiler is entirely based on the rights of the latter. It is worth noting that the station employee also has such an important right as receiving and ending duty with minimal time and with an optimal rhythm of work of the entire station. Simply put, the start and end of work must be timely, and the specialist’s working hours must not exceed the norm.

Working day: acceptance and transfer of duty

A dry listing of the main professional responsibilities, if it gives an idea of the work, is the most minimal. That is why it is worth describing the specialist’s working day itself, how it looks, how it is planned. So, the train designer begins his work day by receiving safety instructions. This happens at a special planning meeting. After this, each employee accepts the so-called “strict inventory” and a certain arrangement of cars. Planning of all further work activities begins with the station duty officer. It usually includes checking cars, servicing them, coupling, uncoupling, etc.

It is also worth considering that the train compiler coordinates each of his actions via radio with the duty officer. There is really a lot of work, and a representative of the profession in question will certainly not be able to get bored. And in addition to servicing the wagons, it is necessary to prepare trains, correctly fill out the log book, check the accepted wagons - and always in person! Thus, the station worker really has a lot to do. The job description of the train compiler states that the acceptance of duty is always established and recorded by the station manager in accordance with all conditions and standards. Upon accepting duty, the employee is obliged to check the condition of all cars, their location, the presence of equipment and special seals on the devices. The transfer of duty is carried out only after checking the trains, placing the cars in their places and ensuring safety in accordance with established standards.

About ranks in the profession

As in many other professions, there are certain grades in the work of a train designer.

There are four in total:

  • 3rd category. A representative of the lowest rank conducts his work in small traffic areas on railways that are not in general use. Thus, the scope of activity of an employee with the third category is limited to some extent.
  • 4th category. It is characterized by the fact that its carriers must work with railway transport not for general use, but in busy areas. Accordingly, because of this, the complexity of the work increases noticeably in comparison with the third category.
  • 5th category. Specialists work with railway transport that is already in public use. However, the work is carried out in low-income areas, that is, where third-class specialists work.
  • 6th category. Holders of this category, the last and most difficult, work in busy areas with public railway transport.

Thus, the responsibilities of a train compiler are varied. In addition, this classification by category allows you to build a system of relationships between superiors and subordinates. To representatives of a high rank, management can assign workers with lower qualifications to be supervised. However, this again depends on the station and the region where this station is located.

Where do they teach?

How does one acquire the profession of “train maker”? Despite the apparent simplicity of the job duties, a person from the street will not be hired for such a job. Appropriate education will definitely be required. So, where can you master this interesting specialty? They teach it in technical schools or colleges, and you can enroll there after the 9th grade. The training course program of the future compiler is devoted primarily to issues of railway traffic safety and consideration of all the smallest technical nuances of this area. Significant attention is devoted to mastering how and in what circumstances special signals are used - manual and sound.

Buy a certificate - what's behind it?

Very often you can find advertisements with flashy headings “Buy a certificate”, “Buy a crust”, “Buy a certificate”. And we are not talking about buying the certificate forms themselves, but about selling a ready-made certificate in your name, which confirms your qualifications. They offer to buy everything from occupational safety and fire safety certificates to blue-collar professions such as slinger, turner, etc.

So, the employee has the right to request from his superiors the equipment necessary for work, namely:

  • special work uniform;
  • signal lamp;
  • yellow flag;

Disadvantages of the profession There are some disadvantages in the profession of a train compiler.

    Many workers will agree that work becomes a favorite job largely due to the fact that there is a healthy, friendly team in it.

Further activities to be carried out during the working day are agreed upon with the station duty officer. Any of his actions must be coordinated with the duty officer using a walkie-talkie. As you can see, with so much work you definitely won’t get bored.
