Darina Kazak

Several centuries ago, people came up with an amazing way to stop time - photography. It is she who allows you to capture happy moments and beautiful places. A photographer is like a magician - he is able not only to capture the right moment, but also to do it skillfully. I had the chance to talk with one of these sorceresses. Once upon a time, photography was a simple hobby for Darina Kazak, but over time, her passion grew into her favorite job. The girl happily talked about all the intricacies of her profession and the miracles that a photographer can create.

– Darina, how did your passion for photography begin?

– I have always loved to travel. Of course, I wanted to capture everything new that I managed to see: unusual places, picturesque landscapes, interesting people, completely different from us... When all this came under the sight of my lens, I experienced a storm of pleasant emotions. Probably, that’s when I fell in love with photography and realized that this is exactly what I would like to do in life.

– You received your education at the Minsk State Linguistic University. Was the knowledge gained at the university useful in your real profession?

– Yes, I can say with confidence that I use the knowledge I acquired quite often. At university I studied two languages: English and French. Therefore, when I shoot abroad, I have no problems communicating with foreign clients.

To be honest, until recently it seemed to me that I didn’t know French well. But one day, finding myself in an unfamiliar area of Paris, where there was not a single English speaker, I realized: when you really need to, you will speak.

– How and where did you study photography? Do you currently have enough knowledge and experience?

– My photography training began at the Studio 67 photo school, where over the course of two years I was able to attend all kinds of courses and master classes.

I had the chance to work with the best photographers Belarus. I am especially grateful to the portrait photographer Yegor Voinov, who instilled in me a love for the portrait genre of photography. I like to study, because this way I can discover something new again and again. I think in every profession you need to grow and develop, and photography is no exception.

– What does it mean to be a photographer? What qualities should he have?

– A photographer should always be a little crazy. But of course that's the list important qualities doesn't end.

Firstly, a photographer is a responsible and punctual person. After all, it is important for the customer not only to start filming at the appointed time, but also to receive the material within a predetermined time frame.

Secondly, the photographer must be sociable, be able to win over and love to communicate, since our profession forces us to constantly be in contact with a variety of people.

Most often, communication brings only positive emotions, but sometimes the opposite happens. In such situations, the photographer will need the desire and ability to understand the other person.

In general, being a photographer means feeling, passing through everything that happens around you. Your photographs will always reflect how you see people and the world around you.

– Why has the profession of photography become so popular now?

– I think the popularity of this profession is due to the fact that many people do not quite correctly understand what exactly a photographer does. A person who has no idea about the work of a photographer sees only the process of shooting and finished photo. But the most important and lengthy stage is image processing. Sometimes you have to spend several sleepless nights to ensure that the picture becomes truly beautiful and turns out the way the customer wants to see it. For him, the magical transformation of a photograph remains behind the scenes, so many have no idea how much time and effort actually goes into working with the material.

Today most of“photographers” are people who buy equipment and don’t know how to use it. But if I get a flute, I won’t even be able to make money in the transition until I learn to play it beautifully!

– What distinguishes professional photographer from an amateur?

- This is very complex issue, it cannot be answered unambiguously. The fact is that today anyone can be a photographer. Some people mistakenly perceive this profession as easy money. Therefore, among people who call themselves professionals, there are often those who make serious mistakes in their work.

At the same time, in our country you can find amateurs who are capable of making masterpieces. They master the technical side of photography and know how to show ordinary things in a bright and memorable way.

In my opinion, it is much more important to be a photographer at heart - someone who devotes himself entirely to his work. He can spend hours looking for ideas for his works and always finds them! He can spot the person he needs in a crowd of rushing people and, having taken a series of photographs, will be incredibly happy, even if the shooting was free.

A photographer at heart is an artist who sells what he writes, and does not write what is sold... It is important that such a person not only works with his soul, but also looks for this soul in others. I think this kind of photographer can be called a professional.

– What do you find most difficult in your work?

– In my work it can be difficult to please every client. After all, everyone has different tastes and views on what exactly photography should be like. Usually the customer trusts me completely. But sometimes a photographer has to defend his opinion, explain why he takes a picture this way and not otherwise. We need to look for a compromise.

The resulting photograph is the result collaboration with the customer. And we also rejoice at this result together. By the way, I often continue to communicate with clients after the order has been completed. With someone it's easy a good relationship, and some even became close friends.

– What do you like to shoot most? Why?

– I like working with children because they are spontaneous, honest and sincere. I also enjoy working at weddings, where sometimes I myself shed a tear at a touching moment...

But most of all I love making portraits, because every person is unique. Before starting a shoot, I always look carefully at the person, trying to understand him, see, feel what is hiding inside him. This is somewhat reminiscent of an appointment with a psychologist. In portrait photographs I try to show people as they are. My main rule: the frame must be real. Mostly girls come to me for portrait photography, so it is important for me to capture and emphasize femininity in the photographs.

– What is the benefit to society from the work of a photographer?

– It seems to me that there is nothing more touching than the joyful faces of mothers who see their beloved children in photographs. If I photograph a young couple, then their happiness and love are always reflected in the photographs. These shots are real, they are incomparable with anything. When you look at such pictures, your soul immediately becomes warmer.

I would even call my profession “phototherapy.”

- Photographer - creative profession. Where do you get inspiration for your work?

– I absolutely love nature. When I'm feeling low, anything connected to nature, especially travel, can recharge me. Sometimes a good movie or music helps. But it's the little things that inspire me most: the morning Fresh air, a child's smile, a kind word. I think the best driver is what brings us joy.

A friend of the author who wrote this article’s father died. She wanted to keep his desk in his memory, but she had absolutely no place to put it. Then she took a photo, and now she can look at it whenever she wants. Interestingly, photographs sometimes look much better than the actual thing that is captured on them.

5. Photos help you collect ideas.

Photography is a great way to capture an idea. And you can collect your ideas and the ideas of other users, for example, on your page on Pinterest.com, so that you can use them later.

Or they could be things that you enjoy looking at. Without buying them, you can admire them regularly, thereby improving your mood.

6. Taking photos encourages creative thinking.

If you take at least one photo every day (only an interesting or beautiful one), then you will develop your powers of observation and creativity to the surrounding world.

7. A photo diary will be interesting reading for you in the future.

We at Lifehacker have already talked about this. But if you just don’t have enough energy for it, try starting a photo diary and adding several photos of bright moments to it every day. Do this every day, and in a few years you will be able to flip through it with the warmest feelings and remember the important things that happened to you during this time.
